Michael O'Neill gives first interview after becoming Stoke City's new manager

Michael O'Neill has given his first interview since becoming Stoke City's new manager.

O'Neill has been confirmed as the Potters' new boss on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

It will see the 50-year-old almost double his £750,000 salary with the Irish FA.

O'Neill will remain in charge of Northern Ireland for the final two Euro 2020 qualifiers and any potential playoff.

Stoke are rooted to the bottom of the Championship following a difficult start to the season. They have won just two games out of 15 in the league.

Speaking to Stoke City, O'Neill said he was relishing the challenge.

"I am delighted to get the opportunity to manage Stoke City," he told the club's YouTube channel.

"I have met and worked with the players today and it is a great opportunity."

He added: "When this opportunity came about I felt it was the right time in my career to go back to club football."

O'Neill's mission will be ensuring Stoke stay in the Championship this season.

Fifteen games in they are in the middle of a relegation scrap which continues with Saturday's game against Barnsley who are one place above them in the table.

"I am not fazed by the challenge. As international manager of a small nation like Northern Ireland we were used to punching above our weight," he added.

"The eight years were quite a successful period for a country our size. That was quite a challenge."
