Michael O'Connor to Glentoran? Mick McDermott provides update on transfer speculation

Glentoran boss Mick McDermott has provided an update on speculation linking Linfield striker Michael O'Connor with the Oval club.

The Glens are keen to secure O'Connor's services during the January transfer window.

It is understood the East Belfast club tabled a £10,000 bid for the Republic of Ireland Under 21 striker , who comes out of contract at Windsor Park this summer.

O'Connor hasn't played for the champions since joining Waterford on loan back in July as part of the deal which saw Bastien Hery move to Windsor Park.

Linfield boss David Healy recently said O'Connor would enjoy a rest after the League of Ireland season finished, before assessing the striker's future come January.

With the transfer window now open, interest is growing in the former Shamrock Rovers and Finn Harps player.

And Glens boss McDermott has confirmed his club have tabled an offer for O'Connor.

"As far as I am aware we made an offer to Linfield which wasn't accepted," McDermott said.

"I am not sure what else can be done on the matter.

"If nothing materialises then we will look at our other options. That's where we are at right now."

Glentoran have already added two new faces to their ranks - midfielder Ciaran O'Connor and experienced defender Keith Cowan.

"We have both those players available for the Irish Cup this weekend," McDermott added.

"We will continue looking during January to see if we can improve the squad, and look at ways of getting our young players more game time, potentially through loan deals.

"We will also receive some phone calls from other clubs regarding our own players. If any offers are made we will always notify the player involved.

"We will always do what is best for the club. We don't want anyone to leave, but sometimes if you bring players in then you have to balance the books.

"We will see what happens in January."
