Michael O’Brien’s Super 25 Chicago high school basketball rankings for Dec. 29, 2019

It’s strange to do the rankings before all the holiday tournaments are over. But the schedule must be adhered to. It’s Sunday, so here is the Super 25.

New additions

Joliet West (12-2): There wasn’t a team in the state that made more of a surprise statement over the holidays. The Tigers are now the favorites to win the Lockport sectional.

Lincoln-Way East (10-2): The Griffins beat Oak Lawn and Corliss to win the title in Effingham. That’s some solid holiday work.

Waubonsie Valley (12-1): I’ve had my eye on this team all season long. Marcus Skeete really made an impression on me last season, he’s an excellent player. The Warriors beat Cary-Grove to win the title at Jacobs.

Dropping out

Oak Park (7-5): The Huskies are featured in New additions and Dropping out more than any other team. They will probably return at some point this season.

St. Charles North (10-3): This is a tough one, but it goes the same way as Simeon below. The North Stars lack a major win

Simeon (7-5): This is going to make a lot of people happy. The Wolverines are the biggest name in the state and everyone is obsessed with their ranking. Simeon is good enough to be ranked but right now they just don’t have the wins. They were 2-2 at Pontiac, but consolation wins don’t get anyone into the rankings.
