Michael O’Brien’s high school basketball notebook

The Lake Park Lancer mural in the brightest gymnasium ever. | Allen Cunningham/For the Sun-Times

Well, I’ve seen both of Lake Park’s losses this season so it is probably time to let them continue their winning ways without me mucking things up.

America’s brightest high school gym appears to be in Roselle. St. Charles North started out 0-for-7 from three-point range so I went ahead and asked Luke Scheffers and Christian Czerniak if the extra-bright lights took awhile to get adjusted to. That was not the problem.

“It kinda gave us energy,” Scheffers said. “I like the lights.”

So did photographer Allen Cunningham, so I guess the bright lights are a win.

Saturday’s top games

Tampa Catholic, Fla. 68, No. 9 Bloom 57 (semifinal), Louisville Male, Ky. 58, Bloom 55 (third place): The Blazing Trojans lose both games in Louisiana today. They shot 1-for-12 from three-point range in the semifinal loss. We’ve seen how amazing Bloom looks when its outside shots are falling, but this is way too talented and athletic of a team to depend on the three.

Hyde Park 69, Rich Central 58: Junior Jalen Houston posted 26 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Senior Zach Miller added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Thunderbirds, who improve to 10-3.

Peoria Notre Dame 53, Glenbrook South 40: The Titans lose in Taylorville. Connor Dillon led the Irish with 20 and Dom Martinelli scored 21 for Glenbrook South. Peoria ND is expected to be a factor in Class 3A this season.

Northridge 58, Clemente 37: Andrew Brockmeier scored 20 and Kevin Thursby added 13 points for the Knights, which are 11-3.

No. 1 Curie 60, Muskegon, Mich. 50: Looks like the Condors got a win without drama in Michigan. Ramean Hinton scored 22.

No. 24 Waubonsie Valley 70, No. 13 Marian Catholic 49: Well how about this. Just a massive victory for the Warriors at the Wharton Fieldhouse out in Moline. Marcus Skeete scored 24 points and Ben Schwieger added 19 points. Waubonsie Valley is 14-1 and has opened everyone’s eyes with this one.

No. 8 Thornton 83, Saginaw, Mich. 64: The Wildcats coast in Michigan and improve to 14-0.

Corliss 43, North Chicago 40: Interesting score here. The Warhawks are just 4-11 this season and have been totally out of the spotlight. They played a good team close today. Jaquan Reed led the Trojans with 11 points and five rebounds and sophomore Joshua Muhammad added 11 points.

Orr 67, TF South 60: This isn’t the win to get the Spartans back in the rankings but it is certainly a step in the right direction. Bryce Hall had a big game with 28 and Demarius Splunge added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Elijah Watson led TF South with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Glenbard East 62, Bartlett 57: I need to get out and see DaRon Hall. Another big game for him with 20 points. Deon Cook added 13.

No. 5 Morgan Park 56, Hazelwood Central, Mo. 52: Brandon Weston scored 26 and Adam Miller added nine.
