Michael Nesmith dead: The Monkees singer and guitarist dies at 78 surrounded by family

The Monkees star Michael Nesmith has died surrounded by his loved ones.

The singer and guitarist of the famous 1960s group was 78 years old.

While an exact cause of death has not been confirmed, family members say it was natural causes.

His devastated family said in a statement: "With infinite Love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully of natural causes."

Michael enjoyed huge success as part of the quartet, who were manufactured for a TV show about a rock 'n' roll group.

The band went on to rival The Beatles by securing hit after hit with the likes of Last Train To Clarksville, Daydream Believer and I'm A Believer, which features in movie Shrek.

Singer Michael fought hard to gain artistic control in the group, as he wanted them to be a real band and not just one made up for a TV show.

The band didn't actually play their instruments on the show in the early days, with Mike at one point getting into such a heated discussion about it he put his fist through a wall.

He once said: "We were kids with our own taste in music and were happier performing songs we liked -- and/or wrote -- than songs that were handed to us."

Now just one of the original four Monkees is alive.

Mike and survivor Micky Dolenz had played their final show together last month.

Back in 2018, The Monkees were forced to cancel their tour dates after Mike was hospitalised.

He suffered a minor health issue before he made it to the venue they were due to play at, his representatives said at the time.

TMZ said the health issue was not serious, but that Michael had been advised by doctors to rest for the next week.

It meant that the remaining four dates of the band's tour, The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show, had to be postponed until a later date.

The band formed in 1966 and enjoyed success through to 1971, before parting ways.

They first reunited in 1986 and have had a further three revivals after that.
