Michael Mosley shares the six foods during breakfast you should avoid on holiday

Those who have been working hard throughout the summer by dieting and working out may be worried that their holidays abroad could ruin all their progress.

While holidays are there to be enjoyed, the disruption to a daily routine could derail your healthy eating plans and impact your weight loss goals. You could even end up reversing any progress you made before jetting off abroad.

However, diet expert Michael Mosley has come to the rescue, and shared his best tips when it comes to enjoying your holiday while maintaining your goals.

For whatever reason you have to take off, travelling can often put your healthy lifestyle on hold, or can be the reason you don't start it. But the health guru has reminded people that they can stick to their meal plans while relaxing on holiday.

Read on below to find out more.

Eat breakfast late

Michael Mosley has been credited for creating the popular Fast 800 diet, which includes the idea of Time Restricted Eating (TRE).

The doctor believes it's not just about what you eat, but when you do it.

TRE involved fasting for 12 hours during every 24 hour period - which means you have a shorter time period throughout the day to eat - which will allow sufficient time for cell repair.

As well as weight loss, the diet guru claims studies show TRE to have a number of benefits including better mood and energy levels.

You can still incorporate TRE into your day while travelling - which includes having a late breakfast.

If your holiday package includes breakfast, see what the latest available time to eat is.

This way, you’ll be able to enjoy a bigger breakfast that will keep you fuelled throughout the day and enjoy your evening meal a little earlier.

Go a walk regularly

According to the expert, walking is a great way to keep active outside of a more structured work out plan.

Walking is a great way to explore the area you are staying, while keeping active.

If it isn't too far, and you are a fairly fit person, you can walk or bike to your sightseeing locations on holiday.

Avoid these six foods at hotel buffets

When staying at an all-inclusive hotel, the temptation to fill your plate up to the brim can be difficult to steer away from.

However, there are certain foods you can enjoy healthily, and others you need to avoid.

Those watching their health can enjoy the following breakfast items regularly:

  • Eggs
  • Omelettes – some hotels have omelette stations where you can choose your own fillings, so don’t be shy with the vegetables.
  • Greek yogurt with berries
  • Vegetables are often available either cooked or raw. You may find cooked spinach, which is delicious with eggs
  • Cheese, nuts and avocado are great healthy fats to add to your plate as they’ll keep you fuller for longer.

These are the foods Michael has told people to avoid at breakfast:

  • Fruit juices
  • Pastries
  • Cereals
  • Muffins and cake
  • Dried fruit
  • Hash browns

The following foods can be enjoyed occasionally:

  • Bread – depending on where you’re holidaying, there may be some healthier bread options. Avoid the plain white varieties and occasionally enjoy sourdough or rye, if available.
  • Sausages and bacon
  • Local treats – holidays are special occasions, and don’t happen too often, so you may want to involve yourself in trying the local delicacies every now and then.

Portion control is a massive factor in enjoying these foods, as it can be easy to forget and fill your plate to the top.

Watch your alcohol intake

Alcohol is a massive factor in weight gain, as people are unaware of how many calories they are consuming through beer, wine and mixers.

If you are looking to enjoy a drink on holiday, Mosley recommends opting for a red wine. Regularly drinking water between beverages will help stagger your intake.

Have emergency options available

It is smart to prepare some food options on holiday, if you are aware there may be tempting things on your travels.

When it comes to planning long day trips, pack some nuts or seeds to snack on.

Fruit is always good to have on hand if you need a sweeter fix.

Making your own sandwiches and salads is also a great idea, especially if there are local food markets and supermarkets around.

Enjoy yourself

The most important thing to do on holiday is to have fun and relax.

Even if you do fall off the wagon while on holiday, you can always get back to it - don't beat yourself up.

Consistency is crucial to weight loss, so you can easily get back on track once you arrive home.
