Michael Mols floats Rangers and Celtic Atlantic League alternative as he urges pair to seek 'money' option

Rangers icon Michael Mols has urged his former team and rivals Celtic not to settle for second best and launch a fresh attempt to gatecrash English football's lucrative Premier League.

The Glasgow giants have long-held desires of plying their trade south of the border but the opportunity has never presented itself despite several false dawns over the past 20 years.

Sides outwith the traditional 'top six' in England have had serious reservations about what Celtic and Rangers joining the Premier League party could mean for them.

That has led to alternative options being discussed such as the much-maligned Atlantic League that continues to meet resistance from clubs across the continent.

And the 50-year-old - who was an Ibrox hero when talks reached a crescendo in the earls 00s - believes the time is now for the big two to make a push for their dream scenario once again if they were to leave the Scottish Premiership behind.

Speaking exclusively to Bookmakers.co.uk, Mols said: "My opinion because financially it’s much more profitable to be in the Premier League.

“When you look at the money involved, the wages they could pay, the money they could spend. It’s unbelievable.

“If you want to attract quality players you need to pay a premium price for them. But Scottish clubs can’t afford it with the TV money they currently get.

“If they want to make progress as a club it would be better playing in the English Premier League.

“When people think about Scottish football they think of Rangers and Celtic, they are the main attractions. If they were to move to the Premier League, the league will lose that attention.

'So the value of the league would go down in my opinion, which is why you can imagine most people in Scotland would want to keep them in the Premiership.”
