Michael Keane outshone at Everton as date looms to stake long-term claim

Adam Jones - 6

Last season was undoubtedly a great one for Michael Keane, which really saw him transform in the eyes of a lot of supporters.

Having struggled in his first term, the centre-back really showed what he could do in 2018/19 and will have come into this campaign full of confidence.

However, this season he has been out-shone somewhat.

The brilliant form of Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina has seen Keane fall back in the pecking order to being the third choice in the eyes of many.

The England international is still a key member of the squad and has shown that on multiple occasions when called upon, but he's not one of the first names on the teamsheet as he might have been last season.

Michael Keane has been battling for his place in the starting XI this term against the rise of Mason Holgate and qualities of Yerry Mina.

The centre-back has never been one to shy away from a challenge and true to form has fought in royal blue this term in the heart of the backline.

His ability in the air is excellent, he moves the ball well and is quick enough to deal with any attacking threat but there are times he's been caught out with players getting in behind or with momentary lapses in set-piece concentration.

Royal Blue: Seven players with forgetful second spells at Goodison Park

No doubt the Everton defender, who was building on the back of a strong campaign, will be working to improve all areas of his game and will be looking to prove himself when football returns to cement a place in the side.

Sixes across the board, then.

Michael Keane has struggled to kick-on after an impressive campaign under Marco Silva last term.

Keane lacked form and confidence after initially arriving the previous season but it was forgiven in the climate of Ronald Koeman's sacking.

Everton need leadership at the back which, at times, he lacks. Next season - or, perhaps, the current campaign when it resumes - will be crucial for his long-term future at Goodison Park.
