NBA legend and Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan has delivered probably one of the hottest takes before the NBA season jumps off.
In an interview Monday with NBC’s “Today,” Jordan said he doesn’t think Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is a Hall of Famer yet.
For context, Jordan was asked if he would pick Curry to play with him on his all-time pickup basketball team. The team consists of Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, James Worthy and Scottie Pippen.
“He’s still a great player,” Jordan said during the interview. “Not a Hall of Famer yet, though. He’s not.”
It’s unclear whether Jordan was being serious when he said this, especially considering what fellow NBA legend Magic Johnson tweeted Tuesday. Johnson said Jordan would be fined by the league if he commented on Curry’s Hall of Fame status.
Johnson, the Los Angeles Lakers’ former president of basketball operations, was fined in 2018 because he violated the league’s anti-tampering rule when he said Giannis Antetokounmpo would lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a title in the future.
Curry’s resume is essentially indisputable, though. As the best shooter of all time, Curry has helped change the game because of his ability to stretch defenses beyond the arc. A three-time champion and two-time MVP, Curry is a future Hall of Famer. He has career averages of 23.5 points per game and 6.6 assists, while shooting 43.6% from three.
The Warriors begin their regular season Thursday at home against the Los Angeles Clippers.
