Brother of John Ibrahim jailed for 30 years after overseas police sting

Michael Ibrahim is the brother of Kings Cross nightclub owner John Ibrahim.

The younger brother of Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim has been jailed for up to 30 years for trying to import drugs and tobacco into Australia.

Michael Ibrahim, whose real name is Moustafa, was charged for his part in a drug and tobacco importation racket worth millions of dollars.

Police said Ibrahim tried to import 1797 kilograms of MDMA, 136 kilograms of cocaine and 15 kg of ice.

In court, Ibrahim argued that his offending was spurred on by an undercover police officer who promised him a way to illegally import goods into Australia undetected.

The court heard Ibrahim's involvement began when he was introduced to the undercover police officer by a co-conspirator.

NSW District Court, Judge Dina Yehia SC said there was no evidence Ibrahim was involved in drug and tobacco smuggling before that introduction, but he seized upon it.

"I am satisfied this offender played a significant role," she said.

"The offender's criminality was in a high order."

Judge Yehia referred to Ibrahim's prior convictions for assault and other matters in his sentencing.

"This is not the first time the offender has come before the court," she said.

The court also heard Ibrahim had a troubled childhood and was bullied at school.

Ibrahim was also shot in the back in his Sydney home in 2015.

Ibrahim was arrested in Dubai in 2017 along with other members of the group who all pleaded guilty.

He was sentenced to 30 years in jail with a non-parole period of 18 after pleading guilty to eight charges.

He faced a possible life sentence, but the court took his guilty plea into account.

"I am guarded about his future prospects of rehabilitation," Judge Yehia said.
