Michael Gove talks up Scottish Champions League Final option as he picks Hampden over Ibrox for 'obvious' reasons

Leading Tory politician Michael Gove admits he would love Scotland to be given the chance to host this season's Champions League Final.

But the Minister for the Cabinet Office believes Hampden Park would be a better choice than Rangers ' Ibrox Stadium to welcome Manchester City and Chelsea on May 29.

Talks remain ongoing with UEFA to settle on a venue with Istanbul added to the UK's travel red list over the weekend which means no British-based supporters will be able to travel.

That has led to renewed talk over an alternative venue with several English stadiums putting themselves in the mix to host the biggest match in club football.

But Gove would like to see Scotland back on the big stage and earn their first Champions League Final since Real Madrid defeated Bayer Leverkusen in 2002.

Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, he said: "Personally speaking, I wouldn't mind if it were held here in Scotland. I wouldn't mind if it were held at Hampden.

That led to Marr responding that Ibrox Stadium wasn't far away from where they were located at BBC's Pacific Quay Studios.

Gove replied: "I think for obvious reasons Hampden would be probably be better than Ibrox, as a place.

"I have an interest to declare, my son is a Chelsea fan and he would far rather it was held in the UK.

"Talks are ongoing. Oliver Dowden the Culture Secretary is talking to UEFA and others about that.

"I think it would be a really good thing but I don't want to cut across the conversations Oliver is having."
