Michael Gove ruthlessly mocked for quoting Stormzy like the massive Boomer he is

Nothing seems annoy Tory ministers more than people encouraging young people to register to vote or not vote for them.

So it isn't a suprise that Michael Gove decided to tweet about Stormzy's intervention in the General Election campaign.

What is surprising is that when people started mocking him he decided to post what is, in a competitive field, probably the most embarrassing tweet ever sent by Cabinet Minister.

Quote tweeting Labour's Angela Rayner's response to his earlier boomer meltdown that Stormzy was "better at rap than politics", the Mr Gove decided to turn the cringe factor up to 11.

Mr Gove tweeted a quote from Stormzy's break-out hit Shut Up.

The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster said: "I set trends dem man copy"

To which the internet collectively replied: "Shut up"

Labour's candidate in Ilford South Sam Tarry tweeted: "This is horrific. No wonder @stormzy describes the Tories as alien to society."

Mr Tarry's response was one of the more polite - here are some you could show your mother.

Of course we can't rule out the fact Mr Gove may just be jealous of Stormzy's success.

It all comes after Stormzy, who sported a Union Jack emblazoned stab-proof vest at Glastonbury in June, said he backs Jeremy Corbyn and has criticised Boris Johnson as "sinister".

Much of rapper's music and many of his performances have included overtly political messages and imagery.

And a massive spike in voter registrations was reported last night, after Stormzy urged his millions of fans to sign up on Twitter .

Mr Gove appeared to dismiss Stormzy's relevance to the political debate.

"I think we again know that Stormzy, when he took to the stage at Glastonbury wearing a stab vest, he made clear what his political views were then," Gove said.

"He is a far, far better rapper than he is a political analyst," Gove told Talk Radio.

Stormzy's number 1 single Vossy Bop includes the lyric "F*** the Government, F*** Boris."

Stormzy said it was important for voters to register by the end of Tuesday to vote.

"I will be registering to vote and I will be voting for Jeremy Corbyn," Stormzy said.

"Boris Johnson is a sinister man with a long record of lying and policies that have absolutely no regard for the people that our government should be committed to helping and empowering."

And the rapper's impact on politics has gone beyond endorsements and lyrics.

He slammed Jacob Rees-Mogg as “the scummiest” in a string of tweets following the top Tory’s comments about Grenfell tower earlier this month.

Mr Rees-Mogg “profoundly” apologised for suggesting Grenfell victims should have used "common sense" and ignored fire service guidance not to leave the burning tower block.

Stormzy's furious response made headlines - and it's thought it contributed to Mr Rees-Mogg apparently being sidelined during the election campaign.
