Michael Gove apologises after getting England lockdown rules wrong

Michael Gove has apologised after getting the rules on outdoor sport during the upcoming national lockdown wrong.

The Cabinet Office Minister suggested on Monday during a question-and-answer session with constituents that people would be able to play singles tennis or golf in pairs when the restrictions come in on Thursday.

This was despite Downing Street insisting it would not change direction over the decision to close golf courses and tennis clubs.

Speaking on Twitter, Mr Gove admitted that he "got this wrong".

He said: "My apologies, I got this wrong.

"Outdoor leisure facilities including tennis courts and golf courses will be closed from Thursday."

According to the restrictions listed on the Government website, indoor and outdoor leisure venues including golf clubs would be closed in order to minimise social contact between people.

The list includes:

  • Bowling alleys
  • Leisure centres and gyms
  • Swimming pools
  • Golf courses and driving ranges
  • Dance studios
  • Stables and riding centres
  • Soft play facilities
  • Climbing walls and climbing centres
  • Archery and shooting ranges
  • Water and theme parks

Boris Johnson announced that the new national lockdown would come into force in England on Thursday and is set to last at least until December 2.

But Mr Gove said at the weekend that the restrictions could possibly be extended if there isn't a substantial drop in the number of coronavirus cases, deaths and hospital admissions.
