Michael Gerard Hampson murder probe cops arrest 57-year-old

A 57-year-old man has been arrested by police probing the death of Michael Gerard Hampson.

Mr Hampson, 53, went missing just weeks before Christmas 2007.

His body was found on January 9, 2008 on the shores of Lough Neagh, near Toomebridge, Co Derry .

Eight police officers were disciplined over the initial PSNI investigation into the Derry man's disappearance and subsequent death after his family complained to the Police Ombudsman.

Mr Hampson was last known to be alive on November 30, 2007 when he travelled with two other men to a pub in Swatragh. His mobile phone was last used at 10pm that night.

Dr Maguire recommended in 2012 that the PSNI should commission an external police service to carry out a detailed review to determine whether the case should be reinvestigated.

A spokesperson for the PSNI said today: "Officers investigating the death of Michael Gerald Hampson have arrested a 57 year old man on suspicion of murder.

"He remains in police custody at this time."

Police have since issued an update this afternoon.
