Michael Gardyne given SFA hearing over alleged homophobic abuse of Rangers' Alfredo Morelos

Ross County forward Michael Gardyne is to face an SFA hearing over allegations he made homophobic comments towards Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in the Staggies' defeat to the Ibrox side earlier this month.

The 34-year-old denied claims he had verbally abused the Colombian forward after manager Steven Gerrard told how captain Conor Goldson was incensed by his remarks following the 4-0 defeat.

The Staggies launched their own internal probe, but found no wrongdoing after Gardyne was booked by match official John Beaton.

PFA Scotland and the SFA's outgoing compliance officer Claire Whyte also investigated the incident and the governing body deemed there to be enough evidence to warrant a hearing next month.

The Association says he allegedly breached disciplinary rule 77, which says players must not "act in any manner which is of improper or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour".

Gerrard walked on to the pitch to confront Beaton following the final whistle, but confessed he had only heard about the alleged language used second hand.

The forward missed County's 2-0 win over Hibs at Easter Road on Wednesday with an injury.

Then-County boss Stuart Kettlewell said he would punish the player if any wrongdoing was found, by the Staggies cleared Gardyne in mid-December.

The club said in a statement: "Following an incident involving Michael Gardyne during our recent home fixture against Rangers the club has now concluded an internal investigation.

"As a result the club will be taking no further action against the player and no further comment will be made."
