Michael Fennelly adds former teammate Michael Kavanagh to Offaly management team

New Offaly senior hurling boss Michael Fennelly has added former Kilkenny teammate Michael Kavanagh to his management team.

Kavanagh, an eight-time All-Ireland winner who played on the last Kilkenny team to be beaten by Offaly in Championship hurling in 1998, comes on board along with ex-Offaly full-back David Kenny of Belmont.

The backroom team is completed by former Portumna All-Ireland club winning manager Johnny Kelly, who guided Coolderry to the 2015 Offaly SHC.

The quartet will be expected to deliver immediate promotion from both Division 2A and the Christy Ring Cup after a torrid couple of seasons for Offaly hurling.

Former Limerick hurler Leo O’Connor, who played against Offaly in the 1994 All-Ireland final, takes over as the county’s minor manager having been involved in a coaching capacity this year. He will be joined by Leonard Deane and Ray Cordial.

Ken Furlong has been confirmed as the new minor football manager and will be assisted by Tullamore clubmate Cathal Daly along with former Offaly teammate Tom Coffey (Rhode) and Stephen Lonergan (Birr).

Furlong’s decision to take the minor job means there is something of a shake-up in the under-20 set up, which he was part of this year.

Declan Kelly remains as manager and retains David Connolly and Ger Rafferty as selectors with Ciaran Grennan and Gavin Shiel also coming on board.
