Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has praised Arsenal's Thomas Partey, suggesting that his compatriot have been an important player for the club during Arsene Wenger's reign had he been around at the time.
The 27-year-old joined the Gunners on deadline day earlier this month after a long period of interest, and impressed supporters during his first two matches under Mikel Arteta.
It could be argued that Arsenal have lacked a top-class defensive midfielder since the departure of Patrick Viera, but Essien has faith that Partey can finally provide adequate stability in the middle of the park.
Speaking to Goal, he described the former Atletico Madrid man as a 'complete midfielder' and backed him to make a big impact in North London.
"I know him, I have seen him play a couple of times and we do talk now and then," he said.
"If he has any questions, he can always contact me for my thoughts – except when he plays Chelsea.
"But I wish him well and I am looking forward to seeing him do very well for Arsenal. They have made a great signing by bringing my countryman to take on the Premier League.
"He is more of a typical number six than me. He is very good on the ball, wins duels, has good speed, reads the danger well and he is a very complete midfielder.
"When I arrived in England, Arsenal were very tough, with Gilberto Silva and a great midfield, so it was a tough team to play against. But I think the Arsenal I played towards the end of my career could have done with a player like Thomas Partey.
"I think it is a great move for him too, though. Arsenal is a great club. The Premier League is also brilliant, so it will help him to improve his game as well."
Arsenal continued their UEFA Europa League campaign with victory on Thursday as they brushed aside Irish outfit Dundalk, courtesy of goals from Eddie Nketiah, Joe Willock and Nicolas Pepe.
They return to Premier League action on Sunday, travelling north for a crunch clash with old rivals Manchester United.
