Michael Elliott moves up at Time

Michael Elliott, the international editor of Time magazine, has taken another step up the ladder and become deputy managing editor, number two to managing editor Richard Stengel.

British-born Elliott retains his job as international editor and was already number two on the magazine's masthead, he now has a much larger role in the editing of the US magazine and will act as Stengel's day-to-day deputy.

"From writing to editing to conceiving covers, Mike is a world-class journalist and the consummate magazine professional, and to have his voice and experience in the domestic magazine will be enormously valuable," Stengel said.

Elliott arrived in the US in 1986 writing for the Economist, later becoming Washington bureau chief and Lexington columnist. He became diplomatic editor of Newsweek and later editor of Newsweek International. Elliott worked in Hong Kong and has been international editor of Time since 2005.

Nancy Gibbs – who has written more Time cover stories than anyone else in the history of the magazine – has been promoted to number three in the hierachy, as executive editor.
