Michael Edwards responds to Jurgen Klopp's request with £60m transfer windfall

Jurgen Klopp went into the transfer market knowing he wouldn't have huge funds to work with at Liverpool on account of the coronavirus pandemic.

The German knew that he would have to sell before he could buy, and that clubs wouldn't be biting his hand off to sign the players he'd be happy to let leave.

But Klopp wanted a couple more players nonetheless to freshen things up in the Anfield changing room, and provide competition for places.

Liverpool signed new left-back Kostas Tsimikas relatively early in the window with the money they had just received from the sale of Dejan Lovren.

Thiago, and a new attacking player remained the priority, but with time running out in the transfer window it was unclear whether Liverpool would get either individual.

According to The Athletic, Klopp holds regular conversations with the club's transfer guru Michael Edwards and FSG president Mike Gordon.

And while Klopp isn't the type to demand a new signing, he did make it clear that two new faces would help his cause.

Unlike other clubs, Liverpool tend to go about their business very secretively before springing a surprise on the public.

And that's exactly what happened on Friday, when it became apparent that Edwards and co. have answered Klopp's request for a £60million transfer windfall.

On Friday the Reds snapped up £27m Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, before moving for £35m-rated Wolves striker Diogo Jota.

The deal for Jota is not yet completed, but it is close, what with Ki-Jana Hoever preparing to go the other way in a transfer worth £10m.
