Michael Edwards has signalled his desire to leave Liverpool when his contract expires in the summer.
The club's sporting director has been crucial in the Reds' recent success, playing a key role in their shrewd activity in the transfer market.
Liverpool are hopeful of extending his stay, but the anticipation, according to the Athletic, is that Edwards will move on after discussions with the club's hierarchy.
Jurgen Klopp has been hailed for how he has transformed the club's squad whilst maintaining a relatively modest net spend.
Edwards has kept a low profile, but has been a huge part of that success.
The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah have all been signed under his watch.
However the sporting director has also been a major part in the club changing training grounds, which furthers his legacy on Merseyside.
In a rare interview he opened up on his role in designing Liverpool's new state-of-the-art facility at Kirby.
He said : "The flow of the building was also important to me, I wanted to make sure the walkways we have at Melwood translated to the new building.
“The fact that the players can walk up the main stairs and still walk past and pop in to see (head of player care) Jane [Griffiths], or (first-team operations manager) Ray [Haughan], or Jurgen or me, is important.
"I believe that helps with the feeling of togetherness and support, so we were keen to keep as much of those elements as possible."
The pandemic delayed Liverpool's move to the AXA Training Centre but Edwards hopes that the new facility can become as iconic as their previous base, Melwood.
“Naturally, turning the vision into a physical reality is such a good feeling,” he added.
“To think that you have been part of the history of the club and helped better people’s environment is very satisfying.
“I think it’s a proud moment for a lot of the staff. Many different people have worked on this project and I hope this building will serve the staff and players of Liverpool for the next 50 years and beyond.
“Melwood was such an iconic place and hopefully Kirkby will become the same.”
Klopp said when the team first moved in back in November: "It is a wonderful building - you have everything you need now and for the future. It's pretty much perfect!"
