Jurgen Klopp always planned to go into the season with three senior centre-back options.
And in fairness, no-one could have foreseen Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez suffering long-term injuries in quick succession.
But moving forward - with Joel Matip and Fabinho currently being relied upon alongside Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips - adding another option to the roster of centre-backs was always likely to be a priority.
Liverpool have kept tabs on Brighton's Ben White, while Dayot Upamecano and Jules Kounde have also been linked.

But the chances of a deal being done at a price that Liverpool would be happy to pay mid-season are less than it would be during the summer, if not impossible.
Upamecano, for instance, reportedly has a release clause of £36 million inserted into his RB Leipzig contract, but that is not believed to come into effect until the end of the season.
He could leave the Bundesliga in January, but at what cost? Probably not one Liverpool, who have shown in the past with Van Dijk they will wait for six months to get their man, would be prepared to shell out.
But there is a solution, albeit one that would require some short-term thinking for long-term gain.
On the Blood Red podcast, Theo Squires said: "Liverpool might not want to make a signing in the winter months when you know that you have Van Dijk and Gomez coming back.
"But you have got the Euros coming up at the end of the season and there might be players who are willing to look for a loan move.
"Look at Chelsea, for example: Fikayo Tomori (England) and Antonio Rudiger (Germany) will want to get into their [national team’s] squads for the tournament.
"There are so many of them who are going to want to get games. You can potentially sign someone on loan and then reassess next summer."
That solution would require a change of tack for Liverpool to hopefully get their main target in the long-term.
Waiting is also an option. But in a season where Liverpool are aiming to retain the Premier League title, that would represent a risk.
