Michael Dawson decision explained as Nottingham Forest boss gives verdict on draw

Depleted defensive resources resulted in Michael Dawson's surprise inclusion in Nottingham Forest's matchday squad at Sheffield Wednesday.

Being an unused substitute for the goalless draw at Hillsborough was the veteran centre-back's first involvement for the Reds all season.

He was a late addition to the bench after Tobias Figueiredo suffered a setback from a hamstring problem and Tyler Blackett was ruled out of the clash with a hip injury.

“Toby came back and trained, then just felt the injury slightly again," boss Chris Hughton told NottinghamshireLive.

“It was literally only yesterday that we made the decision to bring Michael into the squad.

Manager's verdict

Boss Chris Hughton pointed to Lewis Grabban’s saved penalty as a turning point in Nottingham Forest’s 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

The Reds striker had a spot-kick saved just before the break, in a game otherwise short on chances for either side.

Anthony Knockaert had been brought down by Keiren Westwood in the area as he tried to make the most of a loose pass.

But the Owls stopper made up for his error by pulling off a great save to prevent Grabban from making it three goals in three games.

“It was a good save, and it changes the game,” said Hughton.

Player ratings

Nottingham Forest had to settle for a point in their final away game of the season, as they drew 0-0 with Sheffield Wednesday.

Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at Hillsborough.

Brice Samba: Pulled off some fabulous saves to keep out the Owls, including a cracker to deny Josh Windass in the second half. Rating: 8/10

Cyrus Christie: Kept on his toes when Wednesday did look to attack down that flank, but stood up to the task well. Has surely done enough to earn a permanent move to the City Ground. Rating: 7/10

Fans' thoughts

Minnesotajim: I can’t deny its been a pretty dire season but streaming the games has helped keep me sane during this stressful year and a couple of them were even enjoyable! I listened to the second half -today- obviously not a classic! Not sure many of them deserve to be wearing the Garibaldi next season.

devonred: Anyone wanting to know the story of Forest's season had only to watch this one match. Solid at the back, industrious but devoid of ideas in midfield and no penetration in the final third. When the penalty was missed it was obvious we weren't going to score.

RattonRed: Familiar story. Lack of cutting edge. Forest have to spend to resolve that lack.

Redisthecolour: The ONLY good thing about this match is that it means - as it turns out - Derby will go down if they lose to Wednesday. And Rotherham could send them both down.

stockyred: Good defending today. Thought McKenna did even better than Worrall, because of his occasional ability to move the ball forwards. Midfield were not great and forwards were very poor.
