Michael Darragh Macauley retires: Dublin GAA ace hangs up boots with seven word retirement post

Dublin GAA ace Michael Darragh Macauley has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

The midfield maestro confirmed the shock decision with just a seven-word social media post on Twitter.

Pictured as he strolled around Croke Park on one of his many All-Ireland winning days, the 34-year-old said: "Sin é uaimse. Míle buíochas ó chroí."

Short and sweet but his career was anything but.

The Ballyboden St Enda's man got his hands on Sam Maguire eight times with ten Leinster medals in his back pocket too as well as five leagues and two all-stars.

Those star performances came in 2011 and 2013 and in the latter he received the coveted award of Football of The Year.

At club level, he has two county titles to his name with one Leinster and all-Ireland accolade also on his mantelpiece as he looks back today.

Last week, Paddy Andrews announced his retirement from inter-county football after over a decade's service in the blue jersey.

Andrews, 32, described his time with the Dubs as the "highest privilege".

The skilful St Brigid's forward who began his inter-county career as a back played under four managers, Paul Caffrey, Pat Gilroy, Jim Gavin and Dessie Farrell, winning seven All-Ireland crowns, 11 Leinster titles and five National Leagues.
