Signing Michael Crabtree would be an ironic twist for Seahawks

The Ravens released veteran wide receiver Michael Crabtree this week after only a single season in Baltimore. While Crabtree underperformed in 2018, especially after rookie quarterback Lamar Jackson took over and the Ravens became a run-first team, he is still a solid player. His 28 touchdown receptions since 2015 are seventh-most in the league in that span, and he has proved he is capable of being a stable veteran option.

His style may not be spectacular, but it is serviceable, and it could be what the Seahawks are interested in as they are in need of a legitimate third option for quarterback Russell Wilson. Crabtree and Seattle are quite familiar with each other after facing off twice a year for the first six seasons of his career.

However, should this become a reality, it would come with irony. After all, Crabtree is already ingrained in Seahawks lore as being a part of the most pivotal moment in franchise history. It was Crabtree who former Seahawks corner Richard Sherman was defending when he tipped 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s pass for a game-sealing interception in the 2013 NFC championship game.

Now that Sherman is with San Francisco, if Crabtree becomes a Seahawk it would mean the two former rivals would face off once more, only on opposite teams. Sherman the 49er vs. Crabtree the Seahawk would be quite an unexpected twist neither team could have imagined nearly six years ago.

Of course, this is merely speculative as neither Crabtree nor the Seahawks have expressed interest in each other. Although with free agency starting March 13, anything is possible.
