Michael Conlan offers update on Leigh Wood world title fight

Michael Conlan is hoping to return to where it all began for his first world title shot next year.

The Belfast boxer is set to fight WBA world featherweight champion Leigh Wood in the spring of 2022.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed earlier this week that he had secured the purse bid for the fight, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

Wood has suggested Nottingham Forest Football Club's City Ground as potential venue for the clash, while Conlan expects the bout to happen in New York on St Patrick's Day.

Conlan made his pro debut at Madison Square Garden Theatre against Tim Ibarra in 2017, in a bout that was attended by UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

Speaking to Belfast Live, Conlan said: "We are just waiting on a date and venue. It is looking like St Patrick's Day in New York, but nothing is confirmed yet so I am taking nothing for granted."

He added: "New York is a home from home for me, always has been. That's where I started my professional career, and it would be great to win my first world title where it all started.

"It is a fantastic fight against a tough opponent. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome but I will have an answer for everything."

Conlan - who won the WBA Interim world title with victory over TJ Doheny at Falls Park in August - said he would be happy to fight in Nottingham if that is chosen as a venue.

"I would like to see what it's like in the opponent's back garden, but I would say I'd probably have more support than the home fighter," he added.

"I am so lucky to have a fantastic fan base."

On the prospect of winning his first world title, Conlan said: "Once I get the opportunity I will grasp it with both hands. It will be a dream come true and I will be extremely honoured, but it won't be something I will settle for.

"I will want more after that."
