Michael Conlan next fight date and opponent confirmed

Michael Conlan will face Ionut Baluta in London next month.

It is confirmed that Conlan will face the Romanian on April 30 at the Copper Box Arena.

The unbeaten Belfast boxer hasn't fought since last August when he beat Sofiane Takoucht on the undercard of Carl Frampton's win over Darren Traynor.

He then picked up an ankle injury during training which saw hopes of a fight with Isaac Dogboe derailed.

Baluta is well known to Irish boxing fans, having beaten both Davey Oliver Joyce and TJ Doheny in his last two fights.

Conlan, who will be fighting at super-bantamweight, said: "I'm very excited to get back in the ring against Ionut Baluta on April 30. I know how tough of a fighter Baluta is, but I've been training hard since shortly after my last win in August and will be well prepared for victory.

"I'm looking forward to putting on a great show and can't wait to get back in the ring."

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum believes Baluta will be a 'step up' for the Falls Road man.

“This is a big step up for Mick, as Baluta has pulled off quite a few upsets and is motivated to do so once again,” said Arum.

“Mick is close to a world title shot, and I expect him to be at his very best April 30. I am also pleased that American fight fans will have an opportunity to watch the sensational Mthalane, who is in tough against the young Edwards.”

It is hoped that victory over Baluta will tee up a world title shot for Conlan later in the year, potentially against WBO world super-bantamweight champion Stephen Fulton.
