Michael Conlan kickstarts Christmas appeal with £5,000 donation

Big-hearted boxer Michael Conlan has helped kickstart Whiterock Children Centre's Christmas Appeal with a £5,000 donation.

The centre's annual charity drive supported more than 200 children last year, but organisers are having to adapt in 2020 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Most years the centre would ask for donations of clothes and toys which it then delivers to homes in the Upper Springfield and Whiterock areas.

This year they are asking for asking for cash donations and vouchers.

West Belfast boxing hero Conlan wanted to keep his donation anonymous, but following a request from the centre he posed for photographs to help promote the campaign.

"The centre always does a brilliant job every Christmas, supporting families and children who need it most," he told Belfast Live Sport.

"Usually I would drop off clothes and toys but this year is different because of Covid-19. So this year we are trying to raise as much money as possible.

"It is a tough time for everyone, but any donation would be much appreciated by the centre as they look to support families this Christmas."

Conlan added: "I just wanted to come down and make a donation to support the campaign as much as I can.

"I wasn't going to highlight my donation, but if it encourages other people to pledge some money then it is worth it.

"It is a fantastic initiative and it is in the area where I'm from so I just want to help them as much as I can."

Sharon Nelson from Whiterock Children's Centre said she hopes other people support the annual Christmas appeal.

"We are absolutely delighted at Michael's extremely generous donation to our Christmas Appeal and are so grateful to him and others like him," Sharon said.

"This Christmas is going to be particularly difficult for so many and we are humbled by everyone's continuous generosity and we really welcome it all no matter how big or small.

"Last year we supported more than 200 children at Christmas and we have already started our new appeal early due to the anticipated need for help.

"We feel that due to Covid-19 this year is going to be exceptionally difficult for families – with some losing jobs.

"Usually, the centre appeals for donations of toys and clothes which it then delivers to homes in the Upper Springfield and Whiterock areas.

"However, the coronavirus pandemic means this cannot be done and we are asking for vouchers for major stores- eg Smyths, Amazon, Argos, Newlook, Asda, Sainsburys, One4All, Post Office, Sports Direct, JDsports etc Donations of cash can also be made."

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Sharon or Maura at Whiterock Children's Centre on 02890 438438.

Donations can also be made at the following  PayPal link before December 6.
