Michael Conlan camp trolls Leigh Wood with 'idol' tweet

The online verbals have well and truly started ahead of Michael Conlan's world title showdown with Leigh Wood.

Conlan will challenge WBA world featherweight champion Wood at Nottingham's Motorpoint Arena on March 12.

The pair will come face-to-face next week at two press conferences to help promote the fight.

The first one is in Wood's home city of Nottingham on Wednesday, with Conlan enjoying home advantage the next day for the second media event in Belfast.

There has been some verbal sparring already on social media, and Conlan Boxing added some fuel to the fire by sharing an image of a tweet allegedly posted by Wood back in 2019 where the champion asked where he could get a "signed pair of Michael Conlan gloves".

The promotional company tweeted: "When your idol becomes your rival. @itsLeighWood we will get a pair on March 12th my man."

Shortly after they claimed the tweet had been quickly deleted, adding: "Wow @itsLeighWood that was deleted very quickly."

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn seemed to enjoy the cheeky digs. He replied with:

And champion Wood joining in the online sparring, poking fun at Conlan's record.

Wood tweeted: "Nice try. We all know he keeps all his own signed memorabilia above his bed. Bet his house is full of pictures of himself beating bantamweights."

Wood also shared a photo of Conlan sitting ringside at one of his fights, adding: "Who’s the fan boy."

The bookmakers have installed unbeaten Conlan as their favourite for the big fight on March 12.

Betfair have the Belfast boxer at 8/15, with Wood the underdog at 11/8.

Both fighters are supremely confident their hand will be raised in Nottingham, in what promises to be a cauldron atmosphere at the Motorpoint Arena.

Who will prevail? Time will tell.

But the build-up should be as entertaining as the bout itself.
