Michael Conlan called British by boxing commentator before walking out to famous Irish ballad

Michael Conlan was referred to as British by a television commentator just minutes before the boxer walked out to a famous Irish ballad in Belfast on Saturday night.

Conlan was aiming to become a world champion against IBF title holder Luis Alberto Lopez at the SSE Arena, but suffered heartbreak as he was knocked down in the fifth round, resulting in his corner throwing the towel in.

The west Belfast native, who represented Ireland at two Olympic Games, was referred to as a British by English boxing commentator Steve Bunce ahead of the fight.

The irony of the mistake was not lost on Bunce's BT Sport colleague, former world champion and Belfast man Carl Frampton, who was seen laughing before informing Bunce: "You've already gone to meme level there for calling Mick Conlan a Brit."

And Bunce's error was made all the funnier when Conlan, as his growing tradition, walked out at the SSE Arena to the famous Irish ballad 'Grace'.

The ballad of course pays tribute to Grace Gifford who married Joseph Mary Plunkett in the chapel at Kilmainham Gaol in Dublin just hours before the latter was executed by a firing squad for his part in the 1916 Rising.

Conlan started the fight well, but Lopez began to take control in the fourth round and knocked the 31-year-old down with a powerful right in the fifth, with the challenger's corner throwing the towel in.
