Michael Conlan bill will showcase Belfast boxing at its best, says Paddy Barnes

Paddy Barnes believes next week's massive Féile an Phobail bill will be another high point for boxing in Belfast.

All eyes will be on Falls Park on Saturday, August 3 when Michael Conlan takes on Diego Alberto Ruiz.

It is the headline bout on a stacked bill which also sees the return of Barnes who will be looking to get his own career back on track.

The North Belfast boxer was close to retiring following his bruising defeat to Oscar Mojica at Madison Square Garden Theatre back on St Patrick's Day.

It followed his World title loss to WBC flyweight champion Cristofer Rosales at Windsor Park last year.

Two defeats on the bounce, the 32-year-old suddenly finds himself at a crossroads in his career.

But Barnes believes the West Belfast roar at the Feile can kick-start his comeback.

Looking ahead to August 3, Barnes said: “It’s definitely a high point for Belfast boxing. Carl Frampton has been leading the way and now you have this event, where you’ll have about 11,000 so it’s a massive platform for all the Belfast boxers. I’m sure we’ll provide a great showcase for ESPN+.

“It’s unbelievable to be fighting in Belfast again – especially on an event as big as Féile.

"I’ve been to it every year and it’s an amazing occasion. The place is always packed and buzzing.

“This boxing event is being talked about everywhere so there’s sure to be an amazing atmosphere there and I just can’t wait.

“Belfast fans are amazing. They love to see you do well. They don’t just love boxing – they love their own doing well.”

Also on the bill will be Paddy Gallagher vs Chris Jenkins for the British & Commonwealth welterweight crowns and Padraig McCrory vs Steve Collins Jr for the Celtic super-middleweight strap.

There’s a crucial match-up between middleweight world-level hopefuls Luke Keeler and Luis Arias, while Belfast’s own Alfredo Meli meets another undefeated fighter in German-based Araik Marutjan – plus much, much  more.
