BALTIMORE _ In the first spring training, the discussion surrounding Michael Conforto centered around whether he could ascend into the game's elite tier.
Everyone knew Conforto, a regular on this team, was good. But many wondered whether he could become consistently great, one of the sport's top outfielders.
All season, through his play, Conforto has made his case to be mentioned with baseball's big names. In Wednesday's game, he went 4-for-5 with five RBI to lead the Mets to a 9-4 victory over Baltimore at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It snapped a five-game losing streak.
Conforto's day went like this:
_ A two-run home run in the first inning.
_ An RBI double in the fifth.
_ Another RBI double in the seventh.
_ An RBI single in the eighth.
The Mets, now 16-21, must get rolling as only 23 games remain.
