Michael Collins voted Ireland's hottest historical hunk by Twitter users

Revolutionary hero Michael Collins has been voted Ireland's hottest history hunk.

Collins, who died aged 31 during an ambush at Béal na Bláth, Co Cork back in 1922, beat Roger Casement, Charles Stewart Parnell and Theobald Wolfe Tone to claim the prize.

The hilarious poll, which was posted on Twitter by 'The Irish For', raked up over 13,000 votes.

Cork man Collins managed to get himself 48% of the vote, with Casement coming in second at 30%.

Wolfe Tone managed to bag himself 12% while Parnell came in last at 10%.

Winner Collins was a prominent Irish revolutionary and war hero, who has often been credited with being one of the main reasons Ireland won the War of Independence against Britain.

He later became one of the negotiators of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, leading to the creation of the 26 county Irish Free State, which would later become the Republic.

Collins isn't the only revolutionary on the list - some 130 years earlier, Theobald Wolfe Tone was leader of the United Irishmen, a group who were the main organisers behind the 1798 Rebellion.

Tone died in his prison cell aged 35 while awaiting the death penalty - it remains unclear to this day if he committed suicide or was killed by prison guards.

Charles Stewart Parnell was another Irish nationalist, who led the battle for Irish Home Rule in the late 1800s.

He died of pneumonia aged 45 in October 1891.

Roger Casement was another nationalist who worked as a diplomat in the British Foreign Office, and later became involved in Irish Republicanism.

During the First World War, he tried to get German military aid to help Irish rebels in the Easter Rising.

He was arrested, convicted and executed for high treason at the age of 51.
