The Senate intelligence committee has subpoenaed Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen to testify before the panel, after he said he planned to postpone an appearance next week before Congress.

Mr Cohen made the decision to delay his appearance after citing “ongoing threats against his family” from the president and his attorney Rudy Giuliani.

CNN said it was not clear how Mr Cohen will respond to the subpoena filing, but the panel expects him to appear in mid-February.

Senate Intelligence traditionally does their interviews behind closed doors rather than publicly.

Mr Cohen was due to appear voluntarily before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on February 7.

The committee is investigating hush-money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign to silence women who claimed to have had sex with Mr Trump.

The President denies these allegations.

Responding to Mr Cohen's claims of threats made against his family, Mr Trump said: "I would say he's been threatened by the truth.”

The congressional subonena is reportedly the first of potentially several that Mr Cohen could face before he reports to prison on March 6 for a three-year jail sentence on crimes including tax and campaign finance violations and Senate Intelligence Committee.

In December, he pleaded guilty for lying to congress about how long the Trump Tower Moscow project discussions extended into the 2016 campaign.

The committee has been conducting a bipartisan investigation into Russia’s 2016 involvement in the election for two years.
