Donald Trump’s former lawyer labelled him "a racist" as he made sensational claims about the US president in congressional testimony.

Michael Cohen said the 72-year-old president was a “racist, cheat and conman”.

Expanding on the claims of racism to the Senate Committee, Mr Cohen alleged he once heard Mr Trump say black people “would never vote for him because they were too stupid.”

He also claimed: “Mr Trump once asked me if I could name a country ran by a black person that wasn’t a s***hole”.

“This was when Barack Obama was President of the United States.”

He added under oath: “While we were once driving through a struggling neighbourhood in Chicago, he commented that only black people could live that way.”

For more than a decade, Mr Cohen was a key power player in the Trump Organization and a fixture in Mr Trump's political life.

Mr Cohen is set to begin a three-year prison sentence in May after pleading guilty to lying to Congress in 2017 and committing campaign finance violations while he was working for Mr Trump.
