Michael Cohen, a former legal fixer to Donald Trump, has agreed to testify before Congress next month.

Accepting an invitation from a top House Democrat to do so, Mr Cohen said he looks forward to giving a “full and credible account of the events which have transpired”.

Mr Cohen is set to give evidence before the House Oversight and Reform Committee, which sets the stage for a public hearing that threatens damage to President Trump’s image.

It comes after Mr Cohen pleaded guilty to finance crimes tied to illicit payments made to silence women during the 2016 presidential campaign. Prosecutors had said Mr Trump directed Mr Cohen – who was sentenced to three years in jail for the charges - to commit the crimes. The US leader denies this.

Following his guilty plea Mr Cohen cooperated with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, but the upcoming public congressional hearing could shed light on some still-private details he provided.

Mr Cohen said he would “provide the American people with answers” at the hearing, which is scheduled for February 7th.

His statement read: “In furtherance of my commitment to cooperate and provide the American people with answers, I have accepted the invitation by Chairman Elijah Cummings to appear publicly on February 7 before the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

“I look forward to having the privilege of being afforded a platform with which to give a full and credible account of the events which have transpired.”
