American literary couple Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman will interview each other as part of the November series of Sydney Writers’ Festival talks. The couple met on a blind date in 1992. Three weeks later they were engaged, and within the year, were married.
Between them, they have written 20 books and raised four children. Public interest in their relationship peaked when Ayelet’s essay on motherhood, in which she said loved her husband more than her children, was picked up by the New York Times. She’s since been outspoken about their passionate relationship.
Waldman is a bestselling author of fiction and non-fiction, often drawing on her earlier experience as a lawyer in her work. Her controversial 2010 essay collection Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities and Occasional Moments of Grace has been a major hit.
Chabon won the Pulitzer prize for fiction in 2001 with his third novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. He often writes about issues of Jewish identity, fatherhood and divorce.
