Michael Carrick says Man Utd now have 'perfect' midfield selection available

Michael Carrick believes Man Utd now have the 'perfect' midfield selection to choose from amid the returns of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.

United have been without Pogba for much of the season due to injury issues, while McTominay was also ruled out for two months of the campaign.

As such, United have not been able to pair the duo with new signing Bruno Fernandes since the Portuguese star's arrival.

Nemanja Matic and Fred have done an impressive job of steadying the ship in their absence, helping United to an 11-game unbeaten run.

But it seems they now face a battle to retain their shirts with a prospective Pogba-McTominay-Fernandes trio potentially on the horizon.

"It’s something that we haven’t had [a full quota of midfielders] for an awful long time this season," Carrick told United's podcast. "We’ve had injuries and you want the competition.

“The beauty of it is the variety and the different options the boys give you.

"They’ve all got their strengths, but they can play together, there are combinations in there that can play in twos and threes together, but they all bring something different, which is the perfect blend and balance. I’m looking forward to seeing it."

There is little chance of either Pogba or Fernandes sitting out matches on the bench, while McTominay was United's standout performer before his injury.

Fred has since stepped into the Scot's shoes with remarkable assurance, but there are still doubts over his and Matic's places in the side.

Adding of the selection dilemma, first-team coach Carrick said: "I think sometimes we’ve been forced where the lads who’ve been fit have played and done well.

"When Nemanja and Fred have played they’ve done ever so well, they’ve done terrific as a two and complimented each other and blended really well.

“It’s about getting the right mix. Certain games suit certain things, which is something for us as staff and Ole to decide what fits a certain game.

“I do think all of sudden now with everyone fit and Bruno coming into the squad we’ve got a lovely variety to choose from."
