Michael Carrick's furious Man Utd training ground spat sums up type of boss he is

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick has been unveiled as the new manager of Middlesbrough and the Riverside faithful can already know what to expect from their new boss.

The former Red Devils midfielder has very limited experience when it comes to being the main man in the technical area, with his only ever stint as a first-team manager coming in the form of three games as United interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and before Ralf Rangnick's ill-fated interim reign.

Carrick actually produced a brief upturn in results, holding Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge and registering wins over Villarreal away in the Champions League before an impressive 3-2 victory against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

He was also a member of United's first-team backroom staff for the tenures of both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer, alongside Kieran McKenna who has also taken a managerial role with League One Ipswich and has the Tractor Boys flying high in second.

The ex-England international will be hoping for similar success when he gets to grips with his players at the Riverside and if his time as a coach at United is anything to go by Carrick will not suffer fools gladly.

One particular incident that will have the Middlesbrough players wary they should not overstep the mark with the new boss stems from the fall-out from Mourinho.

The former Red Devils boss had a turbulent relationship with ex-Old Trafford star Paul Pogba, now of Juventus, and in response to Mourinho being sacked by Man United in 2018, the French international is alleged to have shouted: "He f***** with the wrong baller", while high-fiving his teammates in celebration.

Carrick, who was on the training ground at the time, did not see the funny side and was quick to remind Pogba he was venturing into dangerous territory if he started thinking he was bigger than the club.

It is thought that the way the new Middlesbrough boss handled the delicate situation with one of United's most high-profile players convinced the club hierarchy to let him take charge in the weeks that followed Solskjaer's sacking.

The fact that Carrick responded to Pogba's behaviour in such a way shows he will run a tight ship where every player is aware the club comes first and big egos will not be tolerated.

Following his appointment at the Riverside, Carrick could barely hide his delight at being given the role. Speaking to the club's website, he said: "Middlesbrough was the first professional club I played for as a nine-year-old boy, so it's a very special feeling to be back here as a head coach.

"Growing up in the north-east myself I'm fully aware of what football means to people.

"It's a real privilege for me to be in this position and to feel all the passion and enthusiasm you've got for the game and for Boro."
