Michael Carrick reveals 'misjudged' comment shot down by Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of Chelsea game

Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has re-evaluated his approach due to Sir Alex Ferguson ahead of the Chelsea clash amid the Ralph Rangnick breakthrough update.

The Red Devils are truly in transition mood since last Sunday's 4-1 defeat at Watford which saw the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign.

His assistant took temporary charge whilst Ed Woodward and co. go put their plans into place and it seems as though the trip to Stamford Bridge will be the last chance for Carrick to leave a good impression on the United faithful.

This is because Lokomotiv Moscow's Sporting Director Rangnick is on the verge of completing his European move away from Russia as he looks to reignite his coaching career by instilling the 'United Way' DNA in his six-month coaching tenure before hiring the permanent successor of his in the summer.

The Athletic have reported that the experienced German has agreed to these terms plus a future consultancy role that will follow as a result of negotiations.

All that is left to do is for the Man United board to agree leaving terms with their counterparts in Moscow before he is released and the move is announced.

Due to work permit issues, one of Thomas Tuchel's role models will not be in the opposite dug out against his student come Sunday, probably to the relief of the Champions League winning manager.

Furthermore, Carrick still has pressure to get United back on track in the Premier League, with the Red Devils having only taken four points from a possible 21 in all competitions.

One of the key tasks facing Jose Mourinho's and Solskjaer's assistant relates to getting the desire and hunger to win back into the squad before the German enters the fray.

Consequently, ahead of the big Super Sunday clash, Carrick has revealed exchanges with Sir Alex Ferguson and the legendary manager had to put his apprentice into place after a few 'misjudged' comments.

Carrick revealed: "I remember seeing Alex Ferguson in his office on my first day and him telling me how there was a relentless desire to win at the club.

"I don’t know why, but I said, 'Similar to Chelsea?' And he shot me down. I was like, 'What on Earth did I say that for? What is he going to think of me now?'"

He then added on Fergie's influence on his coaching style: "It would take me days to answer that one properly! I learned so many things during his time as manager.

"The most valuable thing was probably how to grow a winning mentality, then win again and again with that amazing drive of his.

"He had incredible desire and that became the culture of the football club.

"He taught me how to be mentally strong, never to settle for anything less than you think you can achieve, and to always strive to be the very best.

"Since becoming a coach at United I’ve tried to take inspiration from him, so hopefully he has rubbed off on me. I probably do a few things in training that I picked up from him but don’t realise."

We will hear from Tuchel on football.london later on as he faces the press pre-United and the current situation at Man United with Rangnick will certainly be on the agenda.
