Michael Beale provides update on Steven Davis and outlines Rangers timeline

Rangers will make a decision over the future of midfielder Steven Davis at the turn of the year as Michael Beale opened up on his ongoing Ibrox influence.

Davis suffered a serious knee ligament injury last season and was forced to embark on a lengthy rehabilitation schedule in the twilight of his glittering career.

The Northern Irishman is still working with the staff at Auchenhowie as he bids to return to fitness and extend his time on the pitch towards his 40th birthday.

Beale has spoken positively about the impact that Davis continues to make in and around his first team squad and admits he would have been a valuable asset during the Champions League showdown with PSV Eindhoven in midweek.

Beale said: “Steven Davis is here trying to overcome the long-term injury. He’s been out on the pitch and naturally at his age and with the injury he’s got there have been complications.

“We’ll be nearing towards Christmas before we can see Steven and at that point we’ll make a decision. It’s very open at the minute.

“He’s fantastic to have around. I actually felt we could have really done with him on the pitch on Tuesday night because it was the type of game that someone with his experience would put their foot on the ball make passes.

“There’s nothing been decided on that one. Steven is still doing his rehab and once we get to the end of that he’ll tell us what he’s thinking.

“His biggest thing is how he leads by example outside and in the gym, off the pitch and around the changing room and his he leads by example training.

“Just having him there to bounce things off time and again or for his teammates to get a little bit of a reference from is really important. He’s an absolute class act.”
