Michael Beale in Rangers 'leaders' claim as he reveals transfer challenge amid Premier League comparison

Michael Beale admits his Rangers recruitment motto is that leaders will take priority over 'fillers'.

The Rangers manager is looking to bolster his Light Blues squad towards the end of the season and has been linked with the likes of Norwich City star Todd Cantwell, Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker and Everton midfielder Tom Davies. But the Englishman insists no one will come through the Ibrox door unless they are ready-made to make an impact in Glasgow.

Beale has yet to bring in any new names since the window opened over two weeks ago, but says he can take inspiration from the club's previous recruitment hits such as the acquisition and sale of Calvin Bassey and the development of Nathan Patterson. He also believes Rangers had the 'ideal' squad scenario under Steven Gerrard but says the wheels are in motion to build for the future.

He said: “If you’re a Premier League team with millions to spend then eighteen months ago we probably had the ideal scenario here. We had Calvin Bassey fighting it out with Borna for a place, Nathan Patterson doing the same with Tav.

“But where we are in the food chain of football we sold those players for really good money and then you have to start the conveyor belt again. I think you’re seeing that with Adam Devine who I thought was good at the weekend again.

“I know the recruitment strategy at this club and it is something I believe in. Its something I was heavily involved in before when you look back at some of the players we recruited. It was clear that there was a connection between staff and players.

"As a coach I like to recruit people for specific roles. I like real clarity on where they are going to play. It’s getting that lovely mix between now and future. I don’t want any fillers, I want leaders – people that can go on and be top players for this club moving forward.”
