Michael Beale done 'no favours' by Neil Banfield as Rangers comments earn pundit 'barmy stuff' response

Rangers assistant manager Neil Banfield's comments are doing boss Michael Beale 'no favours' claims BBC pundit Tom English.

The Ibrox number two came out strong in his review of Beale, even claiming that some comments from Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou had left a 'little taste in the mouth' after Rangers were beaten by their rivals in the Viaplay Cup final in February. The former Arsenal coach then went on to compare Beale to some top managers in world football.

But for English the praise showered on Beale, who he admits has done well at Rangers since his arrival, is way off the mark. He believes it won't do the ex-QPR gaffer any favours when trying to match Celtic and being compared to Champions League winning managers.

He told BBC Sportsound: "If you read Neil Banfield today then clearly Aberdeen have no chance because there's a genius in the opposing dugout. Neil Banfield says you can see where Beale is going, his trajectory.

"He talks about Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino and Micky Beale is not far off that. 'He reminds me very much of Arsene Wenger' he says, so Aberdeen have got no chance today. Good luck.

"This is crazy. Why does Banfield do this? He's not doing Michael Beale any favours by doing that. Those four managers have won Bundesligas, French leagues, Champions Leagues, Super Cups, everything. They've won everything in the game. Michael Beale has won nothing.

"Why even go in to that territory. It's mind boggling to me. He's doing really well as Rangers manager, only Celtic have beat them but this is barmy stuff."

Banfield told the Daily Mail on Postecoglou: "For what he has achieved at Celtic, we say well done. The use of the market has been excellent and I like the way they play. But he said one or two things that make you want to say: 'Okay, right, we're coming'.

"And that's okay, that is what it's all about. They'll want to come at us. That's what top-level managers are all about. That's the world we live in.

"There's respect there, no doubt. He is a good football guy and he works for Celtic but he has said things that leave a little taste in the mouth. I'll keep that to myself but he made a quote after the final and it landed on me. And you think: 'Yeah, okay I'll take that.'

"Next time we'll turn that round."
