Michael Barrymore has spoken of dying dad Terry Lubbock’s quest for justice after a man was released without charge over son Stuart’s death.
Police announced two weeks ago that no charges would be bought against the 50-year-old suspect, following his arrest on suspicion of Stuart Lubbock’s murder.
Speaking to our sister paper the Mirror as he walked his dog yesterday, Barrymore said: “It’s a terribly sad situation for everybody.”
Stuart, 31, was found dead in Barrymore’s pool after a party at the ex-Strike It Lucky host’s home in Roydon, Essex, on March 31, 2001. Stuart had internal injuries consistent with a serious sexual assault.
In March, Essex Police said a witness had given them “significant new information” about the case.
Detectives arrested the suspect in Cheshire “in connection with the indecent assault and murder of Stuart”.
After learning the suspect would not face any charges, Stuart’s dying dad Terry said: “I know somebody at that party inflicted those injuries on my Stuart.”
Terry, who has terminal cancer, vowed: “I will continue my fight for justice”.
Barrymore had no further comment on the case, saying “I have nothing to say at the moment”. Essex Police had said on the suspect’s release: “There is insufficient evidence to reach the level where there is a realistic chance of a successful prosecution.”
DCI Stephen Jennings, Senior Investigating Officer, appealed for new information, adding: “We have explored all possible lines of inquiry and sometimes, regrettably, the evidence is not yet there to issue charges.”
Barrymore, 69, was arrested in 2007 and questioned in connection with the death. He was released without charge and denies involvement in Stuart’s death.
