Michael Barrymore issues statement ahead of Channel 4 documentary

Michael Barrymore has issued a statement ahead of a Channel 4 Documentary.

The TV star posted a short video to Twitter where he gave his "heartfelt sympathies" to the family of Stuart Lubbock.

Barrymore also claimed he has been getting "bashed and bullied" ahead of Channel 4 doc Barrymore: The Body In The Pool, which will examine what happened on the night of Stuart's tragic death in his swimming pool almost 19 years ago, reports Mirrror Online.

Barrymore, 67, and two other men - his ex-lover Jonathan Kenney and dustman Justin Merritt - were arrested and later released without charge, and police say the three have not been "completely eliminated" from inquiries.

That night, five others were at the party - Merritt’s younger sister Kylie, chef James Futers, and locals Simon Shaw, Claire Jones, then 17, and Kelly Campbell.

At a press conference, Det Chief Insp Stephen Jennings declared: “One or more of the eight people at this party are responsible for Stuart’s death.”

In the short clip Barrymore explained he has "constantly pressed" for an independent police force to investigate the death of Stuart, who was found with horrendous injuries in the pool of Barrymore's Essex home.

Barrymore said: "I've been asked by various sections of the press to comment upon the Channel 4 documentary that is to be broadcast tonight.

"As I've made clear to everyone, I'm not able to comment because Channel 4 are refusing to show it to me or even let me know what it contains."

While taking a pause, he said: "Forgive me for looking down at the iPad but I don't want to get any of this wrong."

He continued: "However, I will say to anyone who would like to get to the truth of the matter that they should watch the ITV interview I did last year with Piers Morgan. He went into everything and left no stone unturned.

"The truth is I have always done everything anyone has ever asked of me and I've cooperated with everyone."

He added: "I have had nothing to do with this whatsoever and yet I keep getting bashed and bullied by the media. I may comment further once I've seen the show go out later tonight.

"In the meantime, my heartfelt sympathies are with the Lubbock family and I truly hope they find peace.

"And it is for that reason that I have constantly pressed for an independent police force to examine everything to do with the case and reach a proper conclusion and I shall continue to do so."

Now, 19 years on, this landmark documentary explores the full story behind one of Britain’s most high-profile unexplained deaths, as told by the people closest to it.

The show is said to forensically piece together the perspectives of Lubbock family, detectives, forensic pathologists and eyewitnesses, to explore what happened that night at Barrymore’s Essex bungalow and the extraordinary events that followed.

Terry Lubbock, Stuart's father, who is supporting the research, said: "This documentary is about the questions around what happened to my son Stuart Lubbock. Finally.

"The story has become so distorted and confused over the years. So much has been said and written. It's time to put all the facts together in one place."

Channel 4 commissioning editor Alisa Pomeroy said: "This film is a reflective piece that tells the story of an unexplained tragedy that unfolded in the glare of an unforgiving media.

"It sheds light on the complex relationship between celebrity, the criminal justice system and an all-powerful tabloid press in the early noughties, but most of all, it’s the deeply moving story of the Lubbock family’s continuing quest for answers and justice, nearly 20 years on."
