Michael Ball to reprise role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on the West End

Michael Ball will reprise his Olivier Award-winning role of Edna Turnblad in Hairspray next year on the West End.

The musical will open at the London Coliseum in April 2020, running for just 12 weeks. Tickets go on sale today (Friday May 3).

Ball first appeared in the musical during its last run in 2007, playing the mother of lead character Tracy Turnblad, an upbeat young girl who auditions for a part on her favourite TV show. Set in Baltimore in 1962, it contains such songs as Good Morning Baltimore, Big, Blonde and Beautiful and You Can’t Stop the Beat.

Jack O'Brien returns to direct with choreography from Kinky Boots’ Jerry Mitchell. Further casting is yet to be announced.

With music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, the musical is based on the 1988 film of the same name. It first premiered on Broadway in 2002, winning three Tony Awards including Best New Musical.

Ball is also set to appear in the all-star concert production of Les Miserables at the Gielgud alongside Alfie Boe, Matt Lucas and Carrie Hope Fletcher.
