Michael Avenatti, the lawyer for porn star Stormy Daniels in her suit against Donald Trump, has been arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

Avenatti, who had said he was considering running for president in 2020, was being held on $50,000 bail after being detained on Wednesday.

The lawyer has slammed the allegations as “completely bogus”.

Police did not provide details about the alleged victim, including their relationship to Avenatti.

But Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed the arrest.

In a statement on Twitter, the force said: “We can confirm that today LAPD Detectives arrested Michael Avenatti on suspicion of domestic violence.

“This is an ongoing investigation and we will provide more details as they become available.”

Avenatti became famous as Ms Daniels' lawyer and pursued President Trump and those close to him relentlessly for months.

Ms Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has said she had an affair with Trump in 2006.

She has sued to invalidate the confidentiality agreement she signed days before the 2016 presidential election that prevents her discussing it.

The porn star also sued Mr Trump and his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, alleging defamation.
