Michael Atherton reads rude fake name on live TV as England legend is tricked by viewer

Michael Atherton was tricked into reading a rude made-up name while presenting the fourth day of England's Test match with the West Indies.

In light of the coronavirus outbreak, Saturday was the first day cricket was played at a club level across the country.

And during Sky Sports ' coverage of the day's play, commentator and England great Atherton asked people to get in touch with their cricket club's achievements to mark the occasion.

The former England captain's eye was drawn to one message submitted by a Twitter user which alleged that one club bowler had taken some remarkable figures in his first game back.

The tweet read: “Unbelievable scenes for Cockermouth Cricket Club, with Hugh Jardon bowling 6 for 9!”

Unfortunately for Atherton, he read the tweet aloud on air before he realised the trap which had been set, leaving the rest of the commentary box - including ex-England stars Ian Ward and Rob Key - struggling to hold back their laughter.

Cricket fans were quick to pick up on the amusing episode and took to Twitter to revel in Atherton's unfortunate blunder.

One wrote: "Michael Atherton on the Sky cricket commentary being duped into saying '6 for 9 by Hugh Jardon at Cockermouth' is top class."

Another added: "An all-time classic on Sky Cricket. Not the game, but Michael Atherton falling for the world’s oldest joke."

A third put: "Thanks to whoever got Michael Atherton to read that out on the telly. Made my afternoon."

Meanwhile, Ward posted a video of the hysterics in the commentary box, where Atherton and Key can be seen in stitches.

Day four of the first Test of the summer ended with England leading the tourists by 170 runs with two wickets remaining.

Despite a strong start to the day, frailties in the batting lineup were exposed as five wickets were taken for 30 runs to leave the hosts 248/8.
