Michael Appleton outlines Brennan Johnson qualities amid Leeds United transfer links

Brennan Johnson has been one of, if not the standout performer in the Championship this season. His impressive displays for Nottingham Forest saw Bretford attempt to lure him away from the City Ground in January.

Steve Cooper's side would reject that approach and it may just be the difference between promotion to the Premier League. Forest are still in with a chance of securing automatic promotion and the likes of Leeds United and Newcastle are among possible suitors.

The Whites have been linked with a £20million move for Johnson if they secure their Premier League status next season and many have called for Radrizzani to back Jesse Marsch this summer. Johnson spent last season on loan with League One side Lincoln City, Michael Appleton giving the Wales international his first real taste of consistent senior football.

When asked whether it was a surprise to see Johnson linked with a move to the Premier League earlier this year, Appleton told Chronicle Live : "I'm not surprised in the slightest. Not the slightest little bit. I do think he's more than capable of going again and I do think his performances in the Championship have proven that.

"He's just one of those players that are very exciting, very easy on the eye. When you're the opposition manager in League One or the Championship, hopefully soon the Premier League, he's someone you'd take note of because he'll always be one of the two or three teams that you'll be aware of and be wary of.

"I've got no doubts he'll end up playing in the Premier League. For who? I've got no idea. Forest will be hoping it's for them, but listen, he's a Welsh international now and is well established in Forest's side. He had a fantastic season with us last season.

"His development and the way it's happened for him over the last couple of years suggests to me that he's only going to end up going in one direction and that's the Premier League."

Johnson's loan was that impressive with the Imps that a number of fans believe he's the best loan signing they've had in recent history. The Welsh media are tipping the youngster for big things, and Appleton can thank his relationship with David Johnson - Brennan's father - for helping secure the move.

"He came to my attention because of the relationship I have with his dad," said Appleton. "I'd been aware of Brennan for a while to be fair.

"I first met his dad when I was 14 or 15 when we played with each other at Man United. I actually went to his mum and dad's wedding and go way back with David Johnson.

"I was aware that he had a son who was doing well and coming through the youth [system] at Forest. It was always one of them where we knew he was coming through and developing quite well. We just felt that he would be ideal for how we wanted to play and how we wanted to set up and it would probably work well for both parties from a development point of view."

You need just take a look at Forest's win over Arsenal in the FA Cup to see some of the attributes Johnson possesses and how he's ready to cut it in the Premier League. His driving run past Rob Holding was no one-off, with Appleton praising the youngster's natural attributes which Leeds could call upon if they sign Johnson in the summer.

"He's got real good natural attributes in terms of he's quick an direct," Appleton added. "He's always looking to be positive and rarely passes responsibility on and pass the ball square or backwards.

"Every time he receives it he looks to be positive and he can get at someone one vs one or pick a forward pass. Those were the biggest things that stood out for me and excited me about Brennan. When you've got that mindset and attitude, and ability to do it, with that good pace he's got, we knew that he'd do really well for us."
