Michael Appleton coy on team selection ahead of Papa John's Trophy clash with Sunderland

Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton has kept his cards close to his chest ahead of the Papa John's Trophy semi-final.

Appleton is well aware of the threats Sunderland will pose his Imps side on Wednesday night - with Charlie Wyke in fine form.

The Black Cats put Appleton's young Lincoln side to the sword earlier this season but the Imps are flying high this season.

The Imps manager says he's "mindful" of the players who have got his side to this stage of the competition but is assessing his option.

Lee Johnson has a selection headache of his own with Bailey Wright being the only fit centre-back.

Speaking to LincsLive, Appleton said: “It depends on knocks and stuff like that, but we’re mindful of the fact that the lads who have got us there have done a fantastic job.

“We’ll up against a really good side who are obviously on the up in terms of the way they’re feeling about themselves.

“They had a great result against Donny. It’s going to be difficult one because they’ve got a marksman up top who can’t stop scoring at the minute.

“But that’s what we’re here for – we want to play in the big games. We want to make sure we’re in these types of games on a regular basis.”
