Micah Richards left with egg on his face after Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea's Champions League triumph

Chelsea's Champions League win on Saturday has made pundit Micah Richards eat his words after claiming Thomas Tuchel wouldn't win "big prizes" for the club.

Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard at the Blues in January after a disappointing set of results for the London club.

The new boss was tasked with winning silverware and he delivered as Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy for the second time in the club's history on Saturday.

Tuchel's team defeated Manchester City 1-0 after scoring through Kai Havertz in the first half.

And now former City player Richards' words are coming back to haunt him.

Earlier this year he wrote in his Daily Mail column: "There doesn't appear to be a plan after Frank Lampard's sacking... I can't see the new Chelsea boss winning the big prizes at Stamford Bridge.

"Chelsea have appointed Tuchel because they want to win the Premier League and Champions League again. I struggle to see that happening with him.

"What have Chelsea seen in Tuchel that convinces them he will outwit Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp over the course of a 38-game season?"

However, Richards has already eaten humble pie as he backtracked on his comments before the Champions League final.

Speaking on BBC 5 Live, he said: "When [Thomas] Tuchel came in, I didn't see it.

"I didn't think he'd be able to transform this team in the way he has, so soon, I didn't see it. He's made me eat my words. This Chelsea team now are frightening.

"On the counter-attack now, they have the best counter-attack."

Tuchel has led his team to three victories over City including the Champions League final win and the other two came in the Premier League and FA Cup.

And while Tuchel has revelled in winning the European title so early into his time at Chelsea, he won't let the trophy get in the way of future wins.

He said: "It’s the challenge now not to make this success too heavy for us because they have this huge success very early in their career.

"It’s like a similar deal with Tom Brady when they ask him what is his favourite win and he says “the next one”. So this is now the thing, we have a Premier League to play from day one.

"We will be seen a bit differently as Champions League winners and this is where we have to step up."

And the sentiment was echoed by Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta: "We will celebrate, we are champions of Europe again after nine years, second time in our history. But it’s gone, we will go for the next challenge."

The victory on Saturday has led to reports that Tuchel will sign a new contract for the Blues.

Owner Roman Abramovich is impressed with the boss, who he met for the first time in person in Porto.
